Lawrence High's list of qualifiers for this weekend's Class 6A track and field state meet in Wichita has increased by five.
The top three placers at Friday's regionals and the two best fourth-place finishers from the four regionals qualify for the state meet.
The Lions qualified all five of their fourth-place finishers: Laura Rhodes, javelin; Katie Bell, shot put; the 4x100 relay team of Laura Darnell, Meghan Graham, Betsy Willhite and Kizzie Ricks; Joanna Kueker in the 1,600; and Graham in the 300 low hurdles.
Free State High qualified two more because of the fourth-place rule. Betsy Lee advances in the 800 and the Firebirds' boys 1,600 relay team also qualifies.
DeSoto High senior Derek Tate headlines the list of area qualifiers for state. Tate won the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 at the Class 4A regional in Sabetha. Perry-Lecompton's Joe Corcoran won the pole vault at that meet.
At the girls' 4A regional in Sabetha, Tonganoxie sophomore Sara Poje won the 400 and teammate Bryce Downey won the high jump. Other area winners were DeSoto's Abby Swenson in the long jump and Perry-Lecompton's Heidi Yost in the triple jump.
At the Class 4A regional in Abilene, Baldwin's Bryan Williams won the high jump and Santa Fe Trail's Scott Nelson placed first in the 3,200.
Ottawa's Bridget Morrissey and Kristy Morton were winners in the 800 and 1,600 girls races, respectively.
Wellsville's boys won three events and two relays at the 3A regional at Jayhawk-Linn. WHS winners were John Inglehart in the 3,200, Curtis Madden in the shot put and Jonny Gould in the pole vault. The Eagles' 1,600 and 3,200 relay teams also won.
