Tuesday night, Lawrence city commissioners will consider updating the city's ``septage'' policies to reflect several changes brought on by regulatory adjustments, growth pressures and maintenance needs.

Among the biggest changes: Septic haulers -- who drain waste from septic tanks for disposal -- will be charged more than seven times as much to pour the waste into city sewers.

The rate, currently 1.3 cents per gallon dumped, would jump to 11 cents per gallon dumped, plus a base fee of $25 per load.

``The cost of treatment is clearly high,'' City Manager Mike Wildgen said.
