Habitat for Humanity

house to be dedicated

Sheryl Fisher is preparing to move into her new home, built in a whirlwind week with the help of volunteers and local businesses.

Fisher is the latest Habitat for Humanity homeowner in Lawrence, and a service will be held today to recognize everyone who helped with the project. The service will be at 2 p.m. at the Mustard Seed Christian Fellowship Church, 700 Wakarusa.

The service will be followed by an open house at the house, 927 LaSalle. The service is open to the public.

The home was built in March, during a ``Spring Break Alternative'' week. Fisher and 150 volunteers finished everything during the week, except the cabinet installation and floor coverings. Fisher will be signing the mortgage papers this week, buying the house at cost with no interest.

Attempt to avoid ticket

lands driver in jail

A Lawrence man tried to escape a speeding ticket and an arrest for driving with a suspended license Saturday afternoon, but ended up in more trouble when he hit another car while fleeing.

Jason Paul Bowden, 19, was arrested for driving while his license was suspended, no proof of insurance, attempting to elude police and leaving the scene of an accident.

Sgt. Mark Warren said an officer caught Bowden driving 50 mph in a 30 mph zone on 27th Street. Instead of pulling over, however, Bowden led the officer on a chase to Ridge Court, 26th Street and Ousdahl Road, before ending at Colony Woods Apartments, 1301 W. 24th.

Bowden's car hit another vehicle in the 2500 block of Ousdahl Road. No one was injured, and damage was minor.

Bowden remained in the Douglas County Jail on $800 bond Saturday night.
