Kansas assistant volleyball coach Kiran Mistry has resigned to take a similar position at the University of North Carolina. Mistry has been on the KU staff for four years.

KU gridders honored

Three Kansas football players earned honorable mention on the College Sports News preseason All-American teams. KU senior offensive lineman Justin Glasgow, sophomore kicker Joe Garcia and senior linebacker Patrick Brown received the honorable mentions.

LHS-FSHS twinbill


for Thursday

Baseball and softball doubleheaders between Lawrence High and Free State High on Tuesday were postponed because of wet fields and tentatively rescheduled for Thursday.

The baseball twinbill has been reduced to one game, starting at 3:15 p.m. at Ice Field, because LHS senior recognition night is 7 p.m. Thursday. FSHS will play a second game -- against Blue Valley North -- after the LHS game at approximately 6:15 p.m.

The softball doubleheader is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. Thursday at Holcom Complex.

Lawrence High

sweeps Firebirds

Lawrence High's sophomore baseball team swept Free State, 9-8 and 10-9, on Tuesday at YSI.

Shane Hodgson was the winning pitcher in the first game and Thomas Holland the second

Blake Allen, Damon Benitez and Sean Burkhart homered for LHS in the opener. Burkhart had two hits.

For LHS, Joe Amyx went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Brandon Bingham 3-for-3 with two RBIs in the second game. Joey Hartegan was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Derek Wallace gained the save.

FSHS girls soccer

falls to SM South

Overland Park -- Shawnee Mission South bombed Free State High's girls soccer team, 9-0, on Tuesday at the Shawnee Mission Complex.

``In the first half, Marie Keplinger, our goalkeeper, was doing a great job,'' FSHS coach Phil Lee said. ``She held them to three goals in the first half, then she injured herself. She actually did a really good job to that point.''

Keplinger suffered a shoulder injury, and Lee doesn't know if she'll be available for the Firebirds' meeting with Lawrence High on Thursday at YSI. FSHS fell to 0-15.

Free State's junior varsity also fell, 10-0. The Firebirds' JV fell to 0-14.
