Two Journal-World editors were among those receiving awards Saturday night at the Kansas Press Women's annual Communications Contest in Abilene.
Jan Biles, J-W arts editor, placed first and third in feature writing; third in personality profile; third in arts and entertainment writing; first in business writing; second in reviews; third in personal columns-humorous; first in lifestyle and entertainment pages; first in lifestyle or entertainment section; first in infrequent sections/supplements; and second in page layout.
Ann Gardner, J-W editorial page editor, received first and second places in editoral writing.
Other area KPW members receiving awards are: Carol Francis, Lawrence, second place in black-and-white single display ad and second place for nonprofit internal communications; Irene Reynolds, Lawrence, honorable mention in religion writing; Patricia Solbach, Lawrence, first in television single commercial; Susan Novak, Lawrence, second in historical writing and second in infrequent sections/supplements; Lou Ann Thomas, Oskaloosa, second and honorable mention in news reporting, second in feature story, honorable mention in personal columns-humorous; third and honorable mention in personal columns-general; and second in color brochure, profit; Nora Cleland, first in news reporting and first and second in agriculture writing.
First place entries will advance to the National Federation of Press Women contest, with winners being announced at its annual conference in June in Washington, D.C.
