On May 3, 1898, with the Spanish-American war under way the headlines read: ``They Are Ott. -- A Tremendous Farewell To Our Soldier Boys -- A Great Parade. -- The Biggest Turnout of Citizens Seen in Lawrence For Many Years,'' in the Lawrence World. Despite a gloomy, rainy morning, the boys in Company H began their day at Plymouth Congregational Church where ``Flags and bunting draped the entire church,'' joined by many KU students the soldiers marched from the church to the depot. The World noted: ``At the depot, the crowd was so intense that it was almost impossible to move in any direction and a way had to be opened for the soldiers. The number of people present ran into the thousands.''
