Frisbee-catching dogs will compete for fun and prizes Sunday in South Park.
The 1998 Alpo Canine Frisbee Disc Championships will jump into the park at 2 p.m. Sunday. Registration begins at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the South Park Recreation Center, 1141 Mass.
The competition, formerly known as the Ashley Whippet Invitational, is open to all veteran and novice dogs that can catch a flying disc, said Duane Peterson, special events coordinator for Lawrence Parks & Recreation. There is no entry fee, and all participants will receive a competitive disc and certificate suitable for framing.
The competition is one of the more than 125 community events that feed winners into six regional finals, two open finals and eventually the world championships in Washington, D.C. Competitions began in 1975.
