Get a small taste of the world.
Small World, a nonprofit English language school, is holding an open house from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday to celebrate its 30th anniversary.
The celebration at First Presbyterian Church, 2415 Clinton Pkwy., is open to the public. Stamps, coins, dolls, music and arts from different countries will be displayed, traditional dances in native costume will be performed, and foods from around the world will be available.
Small World is a Lawrence volunteer organization. It started in 1968 to help international women and preschool children adjust to life in the United States.
Lawrence residents Hilda Enoch, Mavis Wiseman, Georgiana Torres and Mimi Montgomery spent a semester in Venezuela in the late 1960s, gaining a new appreciation of the difficulty of adapting to a new language and country. When they returned they formed Small World to help international women and their children adapt to life here.
