On May 1, 1898, the Lawrence World responding to the patriotic clamor inspired by the Spanish-American War observed: ``A fool editor who has been beating that rag which is commonly known as the American flag has been run out of Girard. This is right. While America is a free country, that does not mean that every ass that brays must be allowed to make all the noise it wants to the detriment of the public. The time is here when patriotism has full sway. If a man does not feel like falling into line he should keep his mouth shut, and if he does not do this it is the plain duty of his neighbors to see that he does.''
