The Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department is celebrating National Public Health Week by promoting better health through proper hygiene.
Free bars of soap will be available April 6-12 at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vt. Information on proper handwashing and how germs can be transmitted through lack of washing will be displayed.
By promoting healthier lifestyles to help prevent disease and injury, public health efforts save money in medical costs, according to the department. The department promotes childhood immunizations, control of infectious diseases and regulations of food, water and sewage.
National Public Health Week was established in 1995 to recognize the contributions of public health and its prevention services.
