On March 30, 1898 there was increasing talk about going to war against Spain. The Lawrence World editorialized: "War is a terrible thing. It can not be defended from any stand point. It is sometimes inevitable in order to maintain national honor but the president is right in holding back as long as he sees hopes of a settlement without the sacrifice of honor. Public sentiment is aroused in this country. We have an idea that there are no others when it comes to power and this makes us hot headed. President McKinley has a tremendous responsibility. He cannot truckle to the voters of any particular district."
