Flames U-10 Win Tourney: Lawrence Flames U-10 won the Spring Classic Basketball Tournament last weekend in Lee's Summit, Mo. Team members were Rachel Amyx, Lacey Elmore, Emily Erb, Kelli Hartford, Drew Huff, Megan Klingler, Kayla Nolte, Melissa Vinyard and Sydney Wilson. Doug Wilson and Darrell Huff were the coaches.

Two SA Teams Fifth: Salvation Army Hoopsters second and fifth grade boys basketball teams both finished fifth at the Missouri Valley AAU championships in Fort Osage, Mo. The second graders were Justin Ziegler, Weston Wiebe, Alex Hardman, Chris Morgan, Greg Glatz, Steven Griffith and Rafferty Thompson. Wade Wiebe is the coach. The fifth graders were Paul Johnson, Danny Pike, James Stewart, Joe Smysor, Michael Hrenchir, Ryan Rastok and Paul Kempf. Coaches were Tom Rastok and Aman Reaka.

  • Stover Earns 11th: Northwestern's Joy Stover, a senior from Lawrence, finished 11th in the 1,650 freestyle at the NCAA women's swim championships last weekend in Minneapolis, Minn. Stover was timed in 16:27.0.

  • Gymnast Gies Garners Gold: Jacob Gies of the Lawrence Gymnastics Academy won the Level 2 boys 12 & over all-around at a meet in Wichita. Teammate Jean-Paul Castel finished second in the Level 5 ages 8-9 division. Other LGA competitors were Tyler Gist, Chase McElhaney, Cameron Case, Alan Hornbaker, Greg Payne, Fred Bowser and Justin Kelly.

  • Riley, Hickman Win: Steve Riley and Marge Hickman, both of Lawrence, won the male and female individual divisions respectively in the 42-mile Brew-to-Brew race from Boulevard Brewery in Kansas City, Mo., to Free State Brewery in Lawrence on March 8.

  • Four Wrestlers Earn Gold: Jordan Abshier, Kyle Frank, Justin Stevens and Shane Grant of the Lawrence Wrestling Club earned gold medals at the district tournament last weekend in Wellsville. Also qualifying for the state tourney in Topeka this weekend were third-place finishers Marc Somers, Matt Somers, Clayton Kellerman and Shawn Patton and fourth-place finisher Jamie Lee Pettingill.

  • Heitzman Wins in Chicago: Paul Heitzman of Eudora won the ages 65-69 division of the USA Track & Field 8K National Championships last Sunday in Chicago. Heitzman was clocked in 30:51.

  • Skyhawks Collect $500: Lawrence Skyhawks girls U-14 and U-16 softball teams have received $500 from the Grants for Girls program administered by the Women's Sports Foundation. The Skyhawks were among 105 grantees from 48 states.

  • Flames U-14 Second: Lawrence Flames U-14 finished second in the Capital City Classic basketball tournament last weekend in Jefferson City, Mo. Team members were Kristin Bock, Kathleen Daney, Lisa Dixon, Laura Farley, Ashley Ferrington, Nicole Gillespie, Andrea Korb, Kathie Rhodes, Rachel Severance, Kerilyn Walker, Lauren Wilkinson and Caitlin Wisler.

  • Sport 2 Sport Tourney: Sport 2 Sport will play host to a ``Mad Game'' 3-on-3 basketball tournament April 4-5. The tournament is open to boys and girls in grades 4-12. Registration deadline is Monday. There is a maximum of five player per team, and Kansas State High School Activities Assn. rules state that only three players from the same school in grades 7-12 may play on the same team.
