— Services for Stella May Copp Newman, 96, will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Davidson Funeral Home, Topeka. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Topeka.

Mrs. Newman died Friday, June 26, 1998, at a Topeka nursing home.

She was born July 29, 1901, in Eudora, the daughter of Jacob and Mary Wandris Copp. She was a Topeka resident most of her life.

She graduated from Eudora High School. She was a homemaker and also worked as a self-employed seamstress and as an elevator operator at the Mills Building.

She was the oldest member of the East Topeka United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women, where she had served as secretary and treasurer.

She married Frank Burge Newman on May 1, 1921 in Topeka. He died March 22, 1958.

Survivors include a son, Eugene L. Newman, Topeka; a daughter, Stella J. Archer, Phoenix; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a great-great grandchild.

Friends may call from noon Monday at the Davidson Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday.

The family suggests memorials to the East Topeka United Methodist Church, 708 SE Lime, Topeka 66607.


Services for Clarence R. Wales, 69, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Underwood Cemetery.

Mr. Wales died Thursday, June 25, 1998, at Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center, Topeka.

He was born Oct. 7, 1928, in Nash, Okla., the son of Clarence and Mayme Greer Wales.

Survivors include five sons, Mike, Merle and Marvin, all of Lawrence, Marc, McLouth, and Martin, Dallas; four daughters, Marilyn Howard, Marsha Abbott and Marlo Jo Copp, all of Lawrence, and Brenda Wickham, Ind.; two brothers, Charles, Lawrence, and Carl, Williamstown; two sisters, Mildred Hendrix, Cameron, Mo., and Rosemary Venterino, Overland Park; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, where the family will meet friends from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. today.

The family suggest memorials to Douglas County 4-H Clubs, sent in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.
