A Lawrence man arrested for murder months after a decomposing body was found northeast of the city will stand trial in the shooting death.
District Judge Paula Martin scheduled an Aug. 24 trial at the conclusion of a preliminary hearing Wednesday for Deon N. Hale.
Police arrested Hale, 24, near New Town, N.D., in April for the June 1997 shooting death of Robert Baldwin, 31, of Lawrence. Hale remains in the Douglas County Jail on $125,000 bond.
Helushka Wells, 24, was with Hale the day Baldwin was shot and testified on Wednesday that he received a small amount of money from Hale the night of the shooting. Wells said Hale offered Baldwin a ride home from a Lawrence nightclub after they discussed the possibility of robbing Baldwin.
Wells will testify against Hale in return for immunity from additional charges. Prosecutors filed conspiracy to commit robbery and aiding a felon charges against Wells.
Wells testified he helped Hale load Baldwin's body, wrapped in plastic, into the trunk of a car. They later dumped the body near an Interstate 70 overpass, and it was found in late July.
