A 14-year-old bicyclist was listed in critical condition at an area hospital after he was struck by a minivan Tuesday evening.
David A. Yoe, Lawrence, was listed in critical condition at Overland Park Regional Medical Center, where he was taken by helicopter from the accident scene on 31st Street.
Police and a witness said Yoe was riding a mountain bike north on a gravel road in the Baker Wetlands about 5:40 p.m. when he rode across the street and was struck by an eastbound minivan driven by Lynn Stebbins, 32, Lawrence.
``He just went right out in front of her and she swerved to miss him, and he obviously got hit and flew five or six feet in the air,'' said Lawrence resident Alesa Johnson, who was driving behind the minivan and witnessed the accident.
David suffered internal and possible head injuries, police said. The boy was wearing a helmet, police and Johnson said.
Johnson estimated the minivan was going about 45 mph when it struck David.
The van veered left to avoid striking him, and it ended up in the a ditch north of the street. Stebbins was not injured, authorities said.
``I think he hit the front passenger side corner of the van,'' Johnson said. ``She was at an angle when he hit the car.''
Police said Stebbins was not cited, and that according to witness statements, the accident appeared to be the youth's fault.
Johnson said the youth did not appear to slow down when he attempted to cross the street.
David was taken by LifeStar helicopter from the scene to OPRMC.
