On June 7, 1898, the Lawrence Journal had the following headlines referring to the previous evening's city council meeting: ``ROUTINE BUSINESS - The City Council Hears a Number of Matters of Importance Discussed - Action Generally Deferred - Mr. Shaw Replied to Criticisms of the Management of the Affairs of the City - The details of the June Council Meeting.'' Among the items, the Journal reported, was ``The report of the fire department chief for the last year showed that there had been 30 fires in Lawrence during the past year; that the amount paid the fire department was $2,160; that the loss outside of the university fire was $15,220.''
