On June 4, 1898, the Lawrence Journal's headlines read ``OUTDOOR COMEDY - `As You Like It' Given by the University Dramatic Club'' and the accompanying story began: ``The presentation of `As You Like It' by the Kansas University Dramatic Club on the campus yesterday afternoon was a decided novelty, and was a novelty that was a decided success. The day happened to be an ideal one for the event, and an interested audience assembled under the trees as spectators for a spectacle which everyone present hoped will be made an annual feature of the commencement season at Kansas University. With the trees as scenery and the stage on the ground, fallen trees as wings to the stage, music appropriate to the rustic surroundings, and costumes in keeping with the occasion, a character cast that was very strong, the complete success of the presentation was as marked as the enjoyableness of the novelty.''
