A woman who was killed instantly when she was struck by a Union Pacific train northeast of Lawrence Sunday night had moved to the city three months ago.
Douglas County Sheriff's Department officials said Melizza Lara-Honea was about a mile from her North Lawrence home at 620 Elm when she was hit by the train. Lara-Honea turned 21 years old on July 11.
Officials said she made no attempt to move, even though the conductor sounded the whistle several times.
Capt. Bill Shepard of the Douglas County Sheriff's Department said investigators are still looking into a cause for the train accident.
Lara-Honea's body will be sent to Bridgeport, Tex., where she recently lived. Her parents were in Lawrence Tuesday making preparations at Warren-McElwain Funeral Home, which is handling the local arrangements. A funeral will be in Bridgeport.
The accident occurred about 11 p.m. Sunday near the Union Pacific railroad crossing at County Road 1600E, about a quarter-mile east of the FMC plant in North Lawrence.
