A Lawrence librarian has been honored for her work with the city's official Internet site.

A Lawrence librarian has been named ``Cybrarian of the Year'' by a national long-distance telephone company for her work with an Internet site.

Karen Davis, a librarian with the Lawrence Public Library, Seventh and Vermont, was one of 51 winners of a national award program sponsored by MCI.

``I was very pleased,'' said Davis, who was given the award for her work on the CyberVillage, the city's official site on the World Wide Web, which contains many Lawrence Internet locations.

``I think it recognizes the work we have done here at the library and that's nice.''

As the Kansas MCI Cybrarian of the Year winner, Davis will receive a $1,000 donation for library educational materials, and one year of dial-up Internet access.

Librarians in each state were given the title MCI Cybrarian of the Year based on their commitment to using technology to better serve their community and their trailblazing efforts to provide technology to library patrons, according to an MCI news release.

The MCI Cybrarian of the Year award follows a two-month on-line competition. Librarians nationwide completed comprehensive application forms, which were reviewed by an independent National Judging Panel comprised of the nation's leading information technology specialists, MCI said.

Bruce Flanders, library director and the site's co-administrator, said Davis' ``dedication and ongoing efforts related to making The Lawrence CyberVillage an excellent community resource are very rightly recognized in awards such as this honor from MCI.''

The CyberVillage provides more than 15 different categories for Internet surfers to peruse, from arts to travel.

Davis began working on the site in 1995. It was her first stab at an Internet page.

``We needed it,'' she said.

Recently, the site has been receiving more than 100,000 visits per month -- with 108,500 hits in June, and 115,000 hits so far this month, Davis said.
