On July 29, 1898, the Lawrence World, with the Spanish-American War under way, stated: ``It is to be hoped that President McKinley will remain firm in his decision not to ask for the Philippine islands. This country does not need those islands in its business. We could use some coaling stations handily but the people there would not add to the citizenship of the country. Let the Philippines go: However if their cause is just we might demand their independence.''
