The Lawrence Journal-World's USA Today production site has been named the national newspaper's Top Site for 1997.
The Journal-World, which has been printing and distributing USA Today since 1984, also was named Best of the Best for quality performance, received USA Today's ACE Award for performing above standard, and the Inserting Award for on-time performance.
``There are 32 USA Today print sites around the country, and it's a high honor to be named Top Site and Best of the Best,'' said Dolph C. Simons Jr., editor and publisher of the Journal-World. ``We're extremely proud and appreciative of the quality work by all the people who produce USA Today at our plant.''
The awards are based on a day-by-day assessment of production quality, efficiency and consistency.
Supervisors responsible for the award-winning departments are Ed Kelly, press; Steve Campbell, fax and plate; and Wayne Kaufman, distribution center.
The newspaper will receive plaques and cash awards.
In the 14 years since the Journal-World began printing USA Today, it has been a frequent winner of regional and national quality awards. Copies printed in Lawrence are distributed to cities in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Iowa, Oklahoma and Arkansas.
