Police are searching for a woman whose attempted robbery of a Lawrence gas station was thwarted by a clerk who refused to give her any money.
In an attempt to identify the woman, police on Thursday released photographs taken from a security camera nearly three weeks ago at Total Petroleum, 501 W. Ninth. The photos show the woman standing in front of the counter with her left arm behind her back.
Lawrence Police Officer Tom Moore, who is in charge of the Crime Stoppers program, said the woman was in the store for about two minutes, demanding money. She claimed she was holding a gun behind her back, but the clerk told police he never saw a weapon.
She left the store without any money and ran to the east, towards Ohio Street, Moore said. Although she didn't take any money, she committed attempted robbery, Moore said.
The robbery attempt happened at 12:20 a.m. June 11.
Anyone with information about the robbery attempt is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 843-TIPS (8477). Crime Stoppers will pay up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest, and callers remain anonymous. Crime Stoppers does not subscribe to Caller ID.
