A rural Lawrence man remained in good condition Tuesday at Lawrence Memorial Hospital after accidentally shooting himself in the ankle.

Eddie Joe Martin, 39, had just finished feeding his horses about 5 p.m. Monday on his property at 1736 North 1360 Road, which is about a mile east of Lawrence and just south of Kansas Highway 10, when the accidental shooting occurred.

Martin was with a friend who had given him some bullets for his .22-caliber handgun, Douglas County Sheriff Loren Anderson said.

Martin said as he was preparing to shoot at an empty beer can, the gun had a "hair trigger" and immediately discharged. The bullet hit his ankle.

Hair trigger means the gun discharges with little pressure on the trigger.
