A head-on collision Friday afternoon on Highway 40 between Lawrence and Topeka sent two men to Topeka hospitals.
At approximately 3:12 p.m., Kansas Highway Patrol and medical crews responded to an accident near milepost 372, about four miles east of the Douglas-Shawnee county line.
A 1993 Nissan pickup driven by Alexander J. Smith, 28, Topeka was eastbound when Smith passed another vehicle on a curve, in a ``no passing'' zone. Smith collided head-on with a westbound 1995 Toyota car, driven by James Wempe, 27, Overland Park.
Smith was taken by air ambulance to Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center in Topeka where he is listed in fair condition.
Wempe was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Topeka where he is listed in fair condition. Wempe was wearing a seat belt. It was not known Friday night whether Smith was wearing a seat belt.
