Graveside services for Irvin B. (Jesse) Sutton Jr., 72, Lawrence, will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Sutton Cemetery near Baldwin.
Mr. Sutton died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at Brandon Woods Retirement Community.
He was born April 24, 1925, in Tonganoxie, the son of Irvin Benson Sutton Sr. and Doris May Roberman Sutton.
Mr. Sutton served in the U.S. Army. He was stationed at Camp Robinson in Little Rock, Ark., as a master sergeant. He later enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served in Hawaii, Tawara, Iwo Jima, Yousaki, Korea, Bihini, Boring Straits. He was a gunnery sergeant with Mag 12 -- Marine Area Group 12 Squadron 224 -- Boxer Ship. After his retirement from the Marines, he attended Texas A&M; Radio School, learning the Morse Code. He graduated as technical sergeant. He then worked for 20 years for the federal government as a correctional officer at several prisons, including Lompoc, Calif.; Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; and Eglin Air Force Base in Florida.
He married Marzelle Roberts on Aug. 2, 1947. She died on April 8, 1995.
He also was preceded in death by a son, Jesse Duane Sutton, on Aug. 23, 1988.
Survivors include two sisters, Betty Spencer, Shawnee, Lavere Husted, Lawrence; a half-brother, Lyle Sutton, Lawrence; a stepson, Delano Roberts, Everett, Wash.; a grandchild; a great-grandchild and two stepgrandchildren.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and Friday.
The family suggests memorials to Sutton Cemetery in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.
