Free State High School biology teacher Stan Roth has been named the 1997 Conservation Educator of the Year by the Kansas Wildlife Federation, an affiliate of the National Wildlife Federation.

Roth has conducted student-centered field research in western Kansas for more than 30 years with a concentration on studies of bats, reptiles and birds of prey. He attended a conference last October in Loveland, Colo., sponsored by the Colorado office of the Natural Conservancy, and discussed areas in the Central Great Plains that might be suitable for preservation.
