The unarmed missile in Centennial Park may soon be scuttled.

Lawrence city commissioners suggested a willingness Tuesday night to disarm the park at Sixth Street and Rockledge Road, soon to be home to a skate park.

Mayor Bonnie Augustine long has abhorred the old Polaris missile, a fixture off Rockledge for more than three decades. Last week she told staffers she wanted to ``get rid of that ugly thing.''

Tuesday night, Commissioner Erv Hodges offered his support, only not in such strong words. After all, his dad, Buck Hodges, put the missile up in the park as the city's director of parks and streets in the 1950s.

``It's served its purpose,'' Erv Hodges said. ``It was never fired in anger. The Cold War is over. It's time for it to go.''

A timeline for formal disarmament has not been set by city commissioners.
