— A third-quarter surge helped Tonganoxie High's boys basketball team claim a Senior Night triumph.

The Chieftains defeated league rival Santa Fe Trail, 63-59, on Tuesday at Tongie's gym.

``This was as much of a team effort as any game we've played,'' Tongie coach Todd Adrian said.

Matt Williams led the way with 14 points. In all, 11 Chieftains scored.

Santa Fe Trail capitalized on eight Tonganoxie turnovers and a 16-8 rebounding advantage to build a 32-20 lead.

Five seniors started the second half for THS. Derek Vernon snatched three steals and scored eight points to pace a 12-0 run to open the third quarter. Tonganoxie trailed, 39-38, with 1:34 left in the quarter.

``Basically that run won it for us,'' Adrian said.''

Senior point guard Williams hit three straight shots to give Tonganoxie a 57-56 lead with 2:44 left. Another Williams basket at 2:24 extended the Chieftains' lead by three. Centers Mitch Flewelling and Daniel Nelson and guard Bobby Burkin fouled out late. Foul woes forced the Chieftains to use a lineup that included sophs Brett Becker and Neil Rieger and junior Michael Gilner.

Leading 59-56 with 1:46 left, the Chieftains inbounded the ball and killed a minute with a carefully executed series of passes. With :46 left, the Chargers fouled Becker. Becker hit his first free throw. He missed the second, but the ball caromed off a Charger and out of bounds. Neil Rieger was fouled after inbounding. He made one of his two free throws putting the Chieftains up 61-57. Tonganoxie made two more free throws.
