On Feb. 11, 1898, the Lawrence Journal under its Bismarck items commented regarding the area east of North Lawrence: "People out here are solicitous that the tented saloon under the old railroad bridge will start anew to keep the consumers in town where they can be found near home in place of going over in Leavenworth County for the same article. Despite prohibition of liquor being in place since 1881, liquor continued to be consumed in this area.
