— Can we talk?

Eight new sayings are among the tried and true quips featured on the more than 8 billion Sweethearts Conversation Hearts produced to satisfy the sweet tooths of lovers everywhere this Valentine's Day.

The New England Confectionery Company (NECCO), which produces the hearts, says the new sayings reflect the cynical, humorous approach many young people have toward expressing love. The new sayings are "Cool Dude," "You Go Girl," "Yeah Right," "Hello Friend," "Sister Friend," "Be My Icon," "You Rule" and "Web Site." Also coming back from retirement is "Only You."

Walter Marshall, the man at NECCO in charge of choosing new sayings, and known as the "King of Hearts," came up with this year's new sayings by listening closely to his grandchildren and to the media.

"My 12-year-old grandson Adam suggested that 'Yeah Right' would make a good saying for the hearts," said Marshall. "Several of the other sayings are things I've heard my other grandchildren saying over and over.

For instance, Rachel, who is 11, says 'You Go Girl,' a phrase she picked up from watching the Rosie O'Donnell show. Joshua, who is 13, says 'Cool Dude' all the time, and I got 'You Rule' from Sarah, who is 10."

Marshall, NECCO's resident cupid, takes his responsibility for coming up with sayings seriously.

"Since we want the hearts to be attractive to new generations of candy lovers, I'm always listening closely to the youngsters around me. With nine grandchildren, I have plenty of inspiration. Also, people send us ideas for new sayings, and I hear things on TV that sometimes trigger a selection."
