Kristie Winans ruled Thursday night.

Winans, Olathe East's 6-foot-3 center, scored a school-record 30 points to boost the Hawks to a 67-58 Sunflower League girls basketball victory over Lawrence High in the LHS gym.

"(Winans) is a heck of an athlete," said LHS coach David Platt, whose team slipped to 7-6 overall and 4-2 in the league. "We gambled on how to guard her in the first quarter and then decided to keep the ball out of her hands as much as possible.

"Our defense did a good job of that for the most part, but she's just a really good player."

Winans connected on 11 of 20 shots and hit eight of 12 free throws for the Hawks (10-4, 5-2).

Somer Easterwood, Lawrence High's 5-8 junior, had to contend with Winans most of the game. Easterwood finished with 21 points.

Both teams erupted for 51 points in the first quarter. Olathe East led 27-24 after the first eight minutes.

In the second quarter, both teams slowed the tempo and switched to zone defenses. LHS outscored the Hawks 7-6 in the period to trail 33-31 at halftime.

"You can't fault these girls for their performance," Platt said. "They played a solid game, it just came down to fouling in the end."

A three-pointer and a two by the Hawks' Liz Bourland along with a jumper by Winans gave East a six-point lead with just over five minutes left in the third quarter.

The Lions pulled within one on Kizzie Ricks' bucket with four minutes remaining before missing their final four shots of the quarter and trailed 47-42 after three quarters.

East hit 10 of 15 free throws in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.

LHS shot 42 percent from the field and hit 14 of 19 attempts from the free-throw line. Joining Easterwood in double figures were Kate Winter with 13 points and Laura Rhodes with 10 points.

"This was definitely a spectator's game," O-East coach Jeff Hulse said. "You've got to give a lot of credit to the offensive abilities of these two teams. Both played good defense, but it was the offense in this one that made it exciting."

LHS will play at Shawnee Mission Northwest Monday.
