The holiday -- and nonconference -- seasons will come to a halt for Kansas University's women's basketball team tonight.
The 22nd-ranked Jayhawks (9-3) will play host to Houston (4-5) at 7:05 p.m. at Allen Fieldhouse for KU's final nonconference game of the season.
KU hasn't played since winning the Seattle Times Husky Classic Dec. 19-20 in Seattle. The Jayhawks headed home for the holidays on Dec. 21 and returned to practice on Saturday.
After tonight's game, Kansas will open its Big 12 season on Saturday at Texas A&M. That game tips off at 2 p.m.
Tonight's opponent, UH, is led by ShaRonda Lasseter, a 6-foot-3 sophomore center who averages team-highs of 15.7 points and 9.4 rebounds per game. The rest of the starting Cougars show balanced scoring: Chiara Combs, a 5-7 guard, averages 8.4 points per game; Shunta Hart, a 5-8 forward, chips in 8.1 ppg; 6-foot forward Angela Curl contributes 7.9 points; and Danielle Fenderson, a 5-8 guard, adds 7.7 points.
Combs is the Cougars' only senior starter. Hart is a junior, Lasseter and Fenderson are sophomores and Curl is a freshman.
KU similarly starts a senior (Nakia Sanford), a junior (Lynn Pride) and three sophomores -- Jaclyn Johnson, Casey Pruitt and Jennifer Jackson.
Kansas coach Marian Washington enters tonight's game 11 victories short of 500. Washington, who ranks 11th nationally among Division One's winningest active coaches, is 489-270 in 25-plus season.
