On Dec. 20, 1898, the Lawrence Journal, regarding Kansas University, observed: "The report of Chancellor Snow shows that while 40 per cent of the students of the State University are sons and daughters of farmers, only 4 per cent are sons and daughters of bankers or capitalists. This will serve to prove the falsity of the oft-repeated declaration to the effect that the state university is a `school for the rich.' It also proves that the wealthy people of the state send their children out of Kansas to be educated."
