Warren D. Clark of Kaw Valley Homes recently participated in the Manufactured Housing Educational Institute's Professional Housing Consultant Program. Clark was awarded the Professional Housing Consultant designation for successful completion of the training.

Brooke Corp. announced the addition of two insurance specialists. Beverly K. Purcell and Karen L. Stewart have joined Brooke Insurance and Financial Services to represent 32 insurance companies. Brooke represents 52 agencies in Kansas.

  • Dillons Food Stores announced these personnel changes at the 1015 W. 23rd store: Steve Song has been hired as Chinese kitchen manager. Song came to Dillons from Topeka, where he owned and operated the Empress of China Restaurant. Charles Gauna has been promoted to manager trainee. With Dillons since 1978, he most recently was grocery manager.

  • Clint Wolf has joined PaineWebber in Topeka as a financial adviser. He is a Lawrence resident and graduate of Washburn University.

  • Mike Chapman has been named executive director of Brandon Woods Retirement Community. Chapman served as director of rehabilitation services for Brandon Woods before joining Retirement Management Co. as rehabilitation services manager. Retirement Management owns Brandon Woods and manages 10 other retirement communities throughout the country. Chapman, a Kansas University graduate, is chairman of the Kansas State Physical Therapy Examination Committee and has served in several leadership positions with the Kansas Physical Therapy Assn.

  • Jeffery J. Birnbaum, former executive director of Brandon Woods Retirement Community, has been promoted to regional manager of Retirement Management Co. He will provide management support to several retirement communities managed by the company. He has been with Retirement Management since 1990. Lawrence-based Retirement Management manages 11 retirement communities with 2,150 living units and more than 1,450 employees.

Awards and honors

Cathy Belt was named 1998 Outstanding Career Woman of the Year by the Lawrence Women's Network. Belt, director of safety, insurance and personnel services at Harris Construction Co. Inc., was chosen for her professionalism and service to the community. Besides the network, she is involved with the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, United Way, March of Dimes and Women's Transitional Care Services.

Three employees of Lester Building Systems' Ottawa plant were awarded the company's third quarter President's Award. Bob Carlyle was recognized for his attention to detail in preparing for the Husker Harvest Show. Kurt Suchomel was recognized for coordination at the Missouri State Fair and work on other displays. Jeff Marmon was recognized for his efforts to improve manufacturing efficiencies.

Coming events

Cooper's Home Care will have an open house from noon to 5 p.m. today to celebrate the opening of its renovated facility at 2421 Ridge Ct.

Managing Employee Health Care is set for Jan. 27-28 at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka. Sponsored by the Kansas Employer Coalition on Health Care and the Kansas Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the two-day session is intended for human resources managers, personnel and insurance managers, and others concerned with the provision of employee health benefits.
