— Robin Shield scored 29 points, Eve Robichaud added 20 points and Marinda Lamon scored 19 to lead Haskell Indian Nations University to a 93-83 women's basketball victory over Redlands Community College on Saturday.

"The girls really played," Haskell coach Phil Homeratha said. "This could have been our best game of the year."

The Indians improved to 12-0.

Shield added 10 steals and six rebounds.

"She was all over the place," Homeratha said of Shield.

Southwest claims

Martin tourney title

Emily Yessen scored 12 points and Becca Phipps added 10 as Southwest stopped South, 38-31, in the championship game of the Brandy Martin Memorial junior high girls basketball tournament on Saturday at South.

Jennifer Nickell scored 10 points for South. Southwest ended its season with a 10-5 record, while South finished 9-6

West defeated Central, 64-48, for third place. Katy Vormehr had 23 points, Susie Epp 16 and Amy Vormehr 10 for the Warhawks. West ended its season with an 8-8 record.

Firebirds gain 2 coaches

Free State High has dropped the interim tag from cross country coach Steve Heffernan's title, athletics director Steve Grant announced. The Firebirds also have hired former Kansas University softball player Kristina Johnson to be a softball assistant coach this spring.
