Flames Earn Third: Lawrence Flames sixth grade basketball team finished third in the Plaza Lights tourney in Kansas City, Mo. Team members are Rachel Amyx, Jennifer Baker, Drew DeBiasse, Chloe Hall, Drew Huff, Megan Klingler, Erin Kramer, Jamie Stanclift, Shannon Worley and Megan Wyatt. Coaches are Jeff Wyatt, Darrell Huff and Brad Baker.

Kerbel's Team Fourth: Heidi Kerbel of Lawrence was the starting setter on the Barton County CC volleyball team that finished fourth in the NJCAA Tournament in Orem, Utah. Despite suffering a sprained ankle in the second round of pool play, Kerbel was able to participate in the semfinals.

  • Lawrence Runner 13th: Ariel Ludwig, a sophomore at Free State High, finished 13th out of 325 runners in the intermediate division of the National AAU Junior Olympics cross country championships last Saturday in Knoxville, Tenn. Ludwig was timed in 16:57 over a course that measured 50 meters longer than 5K.

  • Flames Claim Second, Sixth: Lawrence Flames seventh grade basketball team finished second at the Holiday Classic tournament in Liberty, Mo., and sixth at the Kansas City Plaza Lights tourney. Team members are Kimberly Davis, Kirby Beneventi, Rachael Klingler, Teal Meyer, Audrey Corkill, Jodie Cochrane, Erin Knight, Angela Wilkerson and Brooke Wenger. Anthony Lyles is the coach.

  • Marlow Earns Two Golds: Sarah Marlow of the Lawrence Aquahawks earned two first places in the Missouri Valley Level II swim meet last weekend. Teammates Ani Biesiada, Rebecca Glass and Alysha Valencia had one gold apiece. Glass and Valencia also had three second-place finishes and Marlow one. Chris Wolff earned a pair of thirds while Glass, Marlow, Valencia, Whitley Jackson and Melissa Little collected one apiece.

  • Shutt Leads Pack: Felix Shutt of Lawrence owned the top score in Class A all events (1383) after last weekend's action in the State Senior ABC bowling tournament. Shutt was fifth in singles (671) and third in doubles with Bob Hellstrom (1272). A Lawrence doubles team of Lauren Pringle and Scotty Harjo was fourth (1264).

  • Hemphill Honored: Lawrence High senior Jonathan Hemphill has been named a scholastic All-American by USA Swimming.

  • Schwartzburg Ace: David Schwartzburg of Lawrence used a six-iron to ace the par-three, 161-yard No. 2 hole at Lawrence Country Club. Witnesses were Chuck Whatley, Dennis Novacek, Allen Hoffman and Floyd Gehrt.

  • City League Spots Available: Openings remain for city-sponsored adult winter volleyball and basketball leagues. For information, call 832-7922. League play will begin on Jan. 17.
