Tonganoxie girls 54, Gardner-Edgerton 51

Gardner -- Deaven Workman led a trio of Chieftains in double figures with 18 points as Tonganoxie (2-0) survived a late rally to clip Gardner-Edgerton in the Frontier League-Kaw Valley League Preseason Invitational high school girls basketball tournament on Tuesday night.

"We beat a good team at their own place," Tongie coach John Lee said. "We barely hung on but this was a quality win."

Tied 28-all at halftime, the Chieftains took a 40-34 lead heading into the final quarter. Workman then took over from the free-throw line, as the 5-foot-8 junior cashed six of seven charities to help seal Tongie's win.

Andrea Korb added 14 points and Jill Stauch 12 for the Chieftains.

"This was pretty much a team effort. We had balanced scoring, great defensive effort. Workman and Korb obviously played excellent tonight," Lee said. "Jill Stauch rebounded from a tough night Monday and gave us a great game, also."

Stauch scored just four points in a 65-41 win over Spring Hill on Monday.

Angie Bartmess paced G-E with 24 points.

Tongie will face Eudora at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday at Spring Hill.
