Shawnee Mission Miege edged Free State, 30-29, in the Firebirds' sophomore girls basketball opener on Monday. Christina Neighbors led Free State (0-1) with 12 points.

Kansas' Uribe ranked

Kansas University men's tennis player Luis Uribe is ranked No. 9 in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Assn. rankings released Tuesday. Uribe, who was 16-2 this fall, is the first Jayhawk to crack the top 10 since Enrique Abaroa was No. 8 in the 1996 preseason rankings.

KU, Sell earn kudos

Senior Kris Sell and the Kansas University women's tennis team both were ranked in the top 25 of the Intercollegiate Tennis Assn. rankings released Tuesday. Sell, who compiled a 14-5 mark during the fall season, is listed at No. 25, her highest ranking ever. The Jayhawks are ranked No. 17 as a team.

South 8th sweeps

Ashley Houk scored 14 points as South topped Olathe Oregon Trail, 28-24, in junior high eighth-grade girls basketball on Tuesday at South. Caitlyn Combest had 14 points as South won the B game, 34-6. South's A team improved to 9-6, and the B team improved to 11-2. South will ends its regular season tonight at Olathe Pioneer Trail.

Veritas Christian

wins two games

Rebekah Vann scored eight points as Lawrence Veritas Christian School beat Kansas City (Mo.) Mission Oaks, 16-14, in a combined seventh-eighth-ninth-grade girls basketball game on Tuesday at Free Methodist Church.

Joel Beard had 16 points as Veritas beat Mission Oaks, 40-39, in the boys' game. They were the first basketball games in the city private school's history.
