An informational meeting about the Miss Lawrence Scholarship pageant, a preliminary contest for the Miss Kansas and Miss America pageants, will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Stephens Real Estate Office, 2701 W. Sixth.

"We've handed out fliers on campus and in town," said Karen Stewart, Miss Lawrence Scholarship Organization co-director.

She said she hopes to draw at least 50 women to the meeting. To be eligible for the pageant, women need to be between the ages of 17 and 25, single, Lawrence residents for at least 6 months and planning to continue their educations.

"Now what they're looking for in a young woman is strength, her belief in her convictions and what she bases her platform on," she said. "It's not so much based on beauty and the swimsuit division."

The pageant will be Feb. 20 in the Free State High School auditorium. It will include talent, swimsuit and evening wear competitions, and an interview.

Miss Lawrence will go to the Miss Kansas pageant in June and will receive scholarship money.
