A Kansas University senior who advanced to the final competition did not win the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship that would have paid for two years of graduate study at the University of Oxford in England.
Anna VanCleave of Overland Park was in St. Paul, Minn., Friday and Saturday to interview for the scholarship. She was one of two Kansas students who represented the state at the district level.
"She was just delighted she got as far as she did," said VanCleave's mother, Janet VanCleave. "She was just so happy to represent Kansas and KU."
VanCleave, who graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Overland Park, was called back for a second interview Saturday but didn't make the final cut, her mother said.
VanCleave is majoring in English, political science and European studies.
Four students were chosen from 14 finalists at the Minnesota interviews. Thirty-two Rhodes Scholars are selected each year from the United States.
Twenty-three KU students have been named Rhodes Scholars.
