What kind of plant grows on Chia Pets?

The seed that comes with the Chia Pet planters is "Salvia hispanica," David R. Hershey writes in the June 1, 1995, issue of Science Activities magazine.

"Salvia hispanica," native to central Mexico, is part of the mint family. It was a major food crop for the Aztecs and was used for cleansing, wound dressing and body painting.

Its plants are much larger when grown in soil. "The Chia Pet provides poor growing conditions because there are no nutrients, and there is very little space for the roots to flourish," Hershey writes.
