The Get Ready Rally will showcase the Kansas University football team with free events Sunday at Memorial Stadium.
Kansas University football fans will get the chance to tour newly renovated Memorial Stadium this weekend during the third annual Get Ready Rally.
The rally, which gets fans pumped up for the upcoming Jayhawk season, will feature games, rides, prizes and free food for the first 2,000 people. The football team and head coach Terry Allen will make an appearance, as well as the KU marching band and the spirit squad.
The event, co-sponsored by the KU athletic department and the Lawrence Journal-World, attracted more than 4,000 people last year and keeps gaining momentum, said Rick Mullen, the department's promotion coordinator.
A collaborative effort, the Get Ready Rally is the outgrowth of ``wanting to do something to promote football,'' Mullen said, adding, ``it's become quite an event.''
The rally is the gridiron equivalent of Late Night with Roy Williams, which kicks off the KU basketball season.
``It helps get us ready for the new season,'' Mullen said. ``We want people to be excited and ready for the football season and kick it off on a good note.''
The event also is a way for the team to show appreciation for its fans, Mullen added.
``Almost everything there is free, and it's to show our fans that we care and we thank them for their support as we get into our new year,'' he said.
Mullen and Neil McEachen, circulation sales coordinator at the Journal-World, said the rally should offer something for people of all age groups.
The annual event will kick off at 6 p.m. Sunday. Activities planned in addition to the pep rally include a rock wall climb, medieval jousting and a dunk tank. ``Moonwalks'' -- inflatable play areas for children -- will be set up on the field, and children also can enjoy a ``super slide.''
