The big top is coming to town -- complete with clowns, elephants and cotton candy.

Culpepper & Merriweather Circus will perform at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds. Lawrence Masonic Lodge No. 6 is sponsoring the show.

The Culpepper & Merriweather Circus is billed as a traditional one-ring circus. The advantage to a one-ring show is all the action is close, John Golden, the lodge's secretary, said.

``You're close enough you can shake hands with the elephant, if you wish,'' Golden said. ``They get people into the act.''

The performances will include aerial acts, clowns and elephants, Golden said. The shows last about 90 minutes and there are 1,000 seats available at each one.

``It's a regular old circus,'' he said. The public is welcome to watch the circus set up, he said, including raising the big top. Preparation should begin between 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. Friday.

Part of the proceeds go to the Masonic Lodge. In the past, Golden said, money has been given to nonprofit organizations and used to sponsor the Masons essay contest.

Advance tickets for the circus are $5 for children ages 2-12 and $7 for adults. All tickets are $1 more the day of the circus. They may be purchased at Dillon Stores, Hy-Vee Food and Drug Store, Wal-Mart, Alvin's IGA and the Scottish Rite Office, 1005 Mass.
