Failure in an electrical switch in a downtown transformer left 11 customers -- including a restaurant -- without power on Monday afternoon.

Power was cut for about 50 minutes when a switch failed in a transformer between the 1000 block of Massachusetts and Vermont streets.

The power was cut at 12:47 p.m. and restored at 1:38 p.m., said Richard Good, manager of community relations at KPL, the electric company.

Among the affected customers was Wheatfields Bakery, 904 Vt., which was busy with its lunch crowd.

``It couldn't have happened at a worse time,'' said owner Charlie Rascoll.

``We had a minimum amount of light and it was getting warm in here, but we got through it,'' he said. ``When you have a little catastrophe like this, the customers are really understanding.''

The restaurant kept serving cold sandwiches and other items during the outage, he said.

The outage was confined to customers along Vermont and Massachusetts streets.
