Private services for Christian Louis Berneking III, 86, Lawrence, will be held at a later date.
Mr. Berneking died Wednesday, July 29, 1998, in Lawrence.
He was born Nov. 23, 1911, in Trenton, Mo., the son of Christian and Mina Garner Berneking. He attended Kansas University and graduated from Auburn University in Auburn, Ala. He had graduate degrees from Auburn, Columbia University in New York City, and Emporia State University, where he received a master's in library science.
He was assistant to the dean of education at Auburn and taught history at Roselle (N.J.) High School and Lawrence High.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Lawrence. He also served on the board of Westminister Fellowship and the Ecumenical Christian Ministries. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta, Phi Delta Kappa, University Club, the Gold Medal Club, and the Pony Express Council of Boy Scouts.
He married Carolyn Virginia Bailey in 1937. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include two sons, William, Wayzata, Minn., Christian IV, Evansville, Ind.; a daughter, Carolyn Kelleher, Willmar, Minn.; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
The family suggests memorials to the Dr. William Bailey Memorial Award, Kansas University Medical Center, sent in care of the Kansas University Endowment Association.
