Stevens State Champ: Justin Stevens of Lawrence won the U-14 heavyweight championship at the State Junior Wrestling tournament in Topeka. Two other Lawrence wrestlers placed. Shane Grant was second in U-12 heavyweight and Jamie Lee Pettingill sixth at U-10 170 pounds.

Summer Volleyball Camps: Lawrence High volleyball coach Jo Huntsinger will conduct three age-group camps this summer. Grade school (4-6) and junior high (7-9) camps are slated for July 20-24 and junior high and high school (LHS only) on July 27-30. For information, call 749-3135 or 832-5050 ext. 250.

  • Hickey Second in A-A: Erin Hickey of Lawrence finished second in the all-around in the level eight 14 & over age group at the State Junior Olympics gymnastics meet with a score of 35.475. In the same division, Lawrence's Kerry Gent scored 33.75. Lawrence's Corrie McDaniel was fifth in level nine with a score of 34.075. All three compete for KGDC which finished second in the level eight team competition.

  • Cummins Low: Jim Cummins shot a 75 for low gross in the Jayhawk Golf Club season opener last Sunday at Alvamar. Pete Cross was runner-up with a 79. Ken Mason, George Davis and Jon Kindlesparger came in at 80. In net, Curt Anderson and John Gerken shared low with 72s. Runners-up were Steve Cross, Bob Cohen and Cummins with 75s.

  • Clifton, Hickman Win: Marge Hickman and Eric Clifton, both of Lawrence, won the women's and men's divisions respectively in the Umstead 100-Mile Endurance Race last weekend in Raleigh, N.C. Both set course records. Clifton was timed in 15 hours and 16 minutes; Hickman in 20 hours, 17 minutes and 21 seconds.

  • Four City Youths Selected: Lawrence's Morgan Matthews, Alicia Sellon, Sarah Butler and Natalie Wilkins are among 18 soccer players chosen for the Kansas U-14 Olympic Development Team. The Kansas team will compete at a regional in July in DeKalb, Ill.

  • Baker Soccer: Peter Lenz of Lawrence and Aaron Hensley of Tonganoxie are members of the Baker University soccer team that played exhibition games in Belgium during spring break.

  • Spray, Plummer Second: Lawrence cyclists Larry Spray and Doug Plummer finished second in masters and expert men competition respectively at the Missouri Fat Tire Series stop in St. Louis last weekend. Lawrence's Chad Lamer was third in ages 25-34 sport men.

  • Kansas University's women's club lacrosse team posted a 20-6 victory over Truman State last Saturday. Mandy Swanne had four goals while Jessica Kibbe and Sophie Nassif added three apiece. Alexis McKinley, Alaina Henry, Janae Hanna, Lara Ratican, Erin Riley, Noeleen Luckert, Torrie Hoy and Caroline Clauson each scored once.

  • Air Force Rugby Champ: Air Force Academy clipped Truman State, 24-13, in the championship game of the WRFU Collegiate Rugby tourney last Sunday at Westwick Complex. Colorado State edged Rice, 26-24, in the third-place game. In Division II, Western (Colo.) State thumped Texas Christian, 31-0. The Women's WRFU Collegiate tourney will be April 18-19 at Westwick.

  • Heitzman Wins in Oklahoma City: Paul Heitzman of Eudora won the ages 65-69 division of the Redbud Classic 10K last Sunday in Oklahoma City. Heitzman's time was 40:02. Heitzman was also first in the age-graded masters competition with an age-adjusted time of 30:41.

  • Area All-Stars: Candace Hochard of McLouth and Derrick Carpenter of Wellsville were named to the all-tournament team at the Northeast Kansas High School All-Star games last Saturday in Highland.

  • Gies State Champion: Jacob Gies of the Lawrence Gymnastics Academy won the Level 2 all-around at the state gymnastics championship last weekend in Wichita.
