The Ottawa County Detention Center opened a year ago with 52 beds, four of which are used for female inmates. The center currently contracts with Sedgwick, Johnson and Wyandotte counties to house inmates from those counties.

Anderson said the new contract with Ottawa County, which lies just north of Salina, is necessary to deal with the rising inmate numbers in the Douglas County Jail. The jail constantly houses more inmates than its capacity of 50.

The yearlong contract would charge Douglas County $45 per day per inmate.
