Western Resources adds to bird nesting efforts
Western Resources has added to bird-nesting efforts that the company began in 1992 in the Lawrence area.
Members of the company's green team, along with Kansas City Power & Light employees, on Friday began work on a flight pen for about 30 species of birds near Linwood.
The pen will be used for wildlife rehabilitation and to house injured or orphaned birds, such as owls, bald eagles, golden eagles and peregrine falcons.
The pen is being built for Operation Wildlife. It should be completed within a few weeks.
Western Resources has provided nearly 800 bird nesting boxes in the Lawrence area since 1992, including 350 bluebird boxes, 400 for kestrels -- small falcon-like birds -- and 10 nesting areas for geese.
