An off-duty Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical firefighter/paramedic was injured after the motorcycle he was riding collided with a car Thursday night on Sixth Street between Folks Road and Wakarusa.

Earl Barnes, Topeka, was in surgery Thursday night at the Kansas University Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan., where he was taken from the accident scene by helicopter.

Lawrence police said Barnes was driving a motorcycle east on Sixth Street, when a car pulled out from a driveway on the south side of the road and attempted to make a left turn to go west on Sixth Street.

The car apparently stalled after it entered the roadway, police said, and Barnes ran into it.

He injured his right leg and the right side of his body. His injuries were not considered life-threatening, authorities said.

Barnes, who began work at the department in February, was wearing a helmet.

The name of the woman driving the car was not immediately available. The accident still was under investigation.
