Haskell used a couple of Muskrat rambles to capture its season football opener on Saturday.

Running back Chris Muskrat ran for touchdowns of 3 and 20 yards in the second half to lead the Fightin' Indians to a 28-7 triumph over Baker's junior varsity at Haskell Stadium.

Haskell struck quickly, scoring twice in the first quarter to grab an early 13-0 lead, but the Indians struggled until Muskrat, a freshman from Warner, Okla., broke loose twice in the second half.

"We played very well in the first and fourth quarters, and I guess if you're only going to play two quarters good, they're probably the best to do it in," Haskell coach Gary Tanner said.

Justin Blaylock scored first for the Tribe on a 20-yard run. Two series later, quarterback Jon Kerr fired a 15-yard TD pass to Greg Standifird.

"We just need to play a full game and not lose our focus," Tanner said. "We had several big plays that we could have scored if we would've cut out the penalties."

Twice Haskell could have scored or been near the end zone on Muskrat runs, but they were called back both times because of holding penalties.

Every Baker player was a freshman playing in his first college game.

"We're not where we wanna be, because if we were, we would have won. But we're not far from that, either," Baker JV coach Ken Johns said. "These guys are molding as a freshman class, and we're hoping these kids bring us back to the Baker tradition of old."

Quarterback David Ewers, despite throwing two interceptions, completed 10-of-19 passes for 108 yards.

Baker tailback Jason Cottrell ran for 53 yards in eight attempts, and Sam Schuelke ran the ball only five times, but still picked up 82 yards. Schuelke scored the Wildcats' lone touchdown on a 56-yard run in the third quarter.

Haskell's defense held Baker's JVs to just 77 yards in the first half.

Next for Haskell is a Thursday night game against MidAmerica Nazarene JV's in Olathe.
